Track: Men bring home Lone Star trophy

May 8, 2012 by Matthew Sloan

Last weekend, the men’s and women’s track teams put their talents on display at the annual LoneStar Conference tournament in Commerce. The men’s team was able to take home their nineteenth consecutive championship while the women’s team claimed second place.

The men’s squad earned over 175 points that will help them on their way to the LSC championship trophy. Although Texas A&M Kingsville nipped at the heels of the Wildcats, the Javelinas were simply outmatched in the end.

The ‘Cats were lead by Nick Jones, senior management major from Abilene, who scored points in four throwing events and set a meet record in the discus throw.

Jordan Geary, sophomore management major from Fort Worth, also had an incredible meet for the Wildcats, scoring eighteen points in two of his individual events, winning the 400-meter and finishing second in the 200.

“It means so much to me to be able to leave winning the conference every year,” Jones said. “Given all the history here, nobody wants to be the team that loses for the first time in almost twenty years.”

On the women’s side, ACU put out a valiant effort, but were unable to take down the four time defending champion, Angelo State, falling short by only a half of a point.

Chloe Susset, senior management major from Abilene, put together an outstanding meet by winning the 1,500-meter run for the second straight year, finishing second place in the 5,000-meter run, and leading the pack in the steeplechase.

“It was really a heartbreaker for us,” said head coach Roosevelt Lofton. “But the ladies stepped up huge, and it says a lot about their character. We will be able to build on this for next year.”

Sheenae Steele, senior graphic design and advertising major from Brampton, Ontario, also had an exceptional meet, winning the 100 and 200-meter sprint and scoring twenty points for her team, and Lexus Williams, freshman exercise science and health major from Mesquite, posted a first place finish with her work in the 100-meter hurdles.

Today the Wildcats will be at home in the ACU Oliver Jackson Twilight event in a tune-up event before the NCAA Division Two Outdoor Championship later on this month.

"Ending my college education early was always the plan for me, but the things that I have been able to see, experience and examine about ACU’s community were not. I have found immense growth in ACU over the past three and a half years, but ACU still has a long road to climb if it wants to keep catering to students as the world changes around them."
