Volleyball preps in hope for tourney play: ACU plays host to Texas Woman’s, MSU this weekend

By Joshua Parrott, Sports Writer

With the Lone Star Conference Post-Season Tour-nament less than a month away, the ACU volleyball team rested this past weekend in preparation for Tuesday’s non-conference match against St. Mary’s.

The Wildcats, 14-10 overall, 3-3 in LSC South play, played perhaps the most dominating match of the season in the Oct. 11 match against St. Mary’s. ACU disposed of St. Mary’s easily in three games, 30-28, 30-21, 30-21. The results of Tuesday’s match were unavailable at press time.

Head coach Brek Horn said the weekend gave the team a chance to mend.

“We have a few minor injuries, including one to Michelle (Bernhardt),” Horn said. “We also took the time to work on individual skills last week and then put it all together for practice this week.”

The Wildcats play two LSC Crossover matches against the bottom-dwell-ers of the LSC North, 7 p.m. Friday against Texas Woman’s and 7 p.m. Sat-urday against Midwestern State. Texas Wo-man’s enters the week with a 4-18 overall re-cord, including a 2-4 mark in the LSC North. Midwestern State is currently 9-16 overall and an even 4-4 in LSC North play.

Horn said she expects her team to defeat both teams.

As a team, the Wildcats rank fourth in the LSC in both blocks (2.16 per game) and service aces (2.11). Bernhardt, freshman outside hitter from Hereford, leads the team in kills with 359, while also struggling with back spasms. She also ranks in the top five in the LSC in kills, as does junior outside hitter Haylee Hartline.

Redshirt freshman setter Lindsey Martin leads the LSC South and is second in the LSC in assists with nearly 12 per game. Se-nior defensive specialist and libero player Grae Grimes is second in the LSC in digs, averaging more than 4 per game.

Bernhardt said the Wildcats will come out of this weekend victorious be-cause they are playing well as a team.

“We have a bunch of talent,” Bernhardt said. “Every-one on the team has played great.”

Royce Clough and Jael Morel have been named as Mr. and Miss ACU for the class of 2022, a traditional honor voted on by the student body and awarded to two members of each graduating class.
