Spring pledging returns: Some social clubs begin back practice after two year break

January 17, 2003 by Lori Bredemeyer

By Lori Bredemeyer, Staff Writer

Six social clubs will soon begin spring pledging for the first time in two years, beginning with an informational meeting Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the Hilton Room.

Because most students join a social club in the fall, pledging in the spring can be a less intimidating experience, said Amanda Spell, coordinator of student organizations and campus activities.

“It’s a good opportunity for someone who doesn’t like the large group setting and who wouldn’t join in the fall because there’s so many people,” she said. “It’s a smaller setting and some people are more comfortable with that.”

One women’s club, Tri Kappa Gamma, will be participating this spring, along with five men’s clubs: Delta Chi Rho, Frater Sodalis, Phi Beta Epsilon, Pi Kappa and Trojans.

Students must register to pledge by 5 p.m. Wednesday. The pledging process will start with Bid Night on Jan. 31 and will last about four weeks, Spell said.

Frater Sodalis will be the only social club participating in spring pledging and Sing Song simultaneously, and therefore have been allowed fewer hours each week for pledging .

The club’s president, Randy Trowell, said it will be hard for the club to manage both events.

Last spring no clubs inducted members, and Spell said spring pledging has not been done on a regular basis recently.
