Fresh off a four-game winning streak, the women’s basketball team has its eyes set on the Lone Star Conference Post-Season Tournament, which it can qualify for with one more victory in its final two regular season games.
“Right now I definitely think we’ve put ourselves in a position to make the playoffs,” interim head coach Shawna Lavender said. “The way the girls are playing right now, I don’t see why we shouldn’t qualify.”
Since Lavender has been at the Wildcats’ helm, they have been a perfect 4-0, a fact she says she isn’t fully responsible for.
“It feels good [to be 4-0] because the girls have been playing great,” Lavender said. “I’m excited about them getting a chance to be in the conference tournament.”
The team took its most recent step toward doing this in a 78-57 pounding of Eastern New Mexico in Portales, N.M., Saturday.
“They’re playing with a lot more confidence,” Lavender said after the victory. “They’re doing all the little things right. They’re playing as a team and having fun.”
ACU’s final test comes this week, as it wraps up the season with home games against Texas Woman’s on Thursday and Midwestern State on Saturday.
Texas Woman’s (9-15, 5-7) is one game behind ACU in the LSC South, while Midwestern State (20-5, 11-1) is tied for first place in the division with Angelo State.
Both teams came from behind to record victories against the Wildcats earlier in the season.
“The girls are looking for a little bit of revenge this weekend,” Lavender said.
