ACU to face eight teams over break

March 5, 2003 by Brian Roe

By Brian Roe, Sports Writer

Due to winter weather storms from last week, the ACU women’s tennis team did not complete the scheduled matches against Texas Tech and Eastern New Mexico.

The team traveled Tuesday to Portales, N.M., in the midst of the icy weather, to attempt and play the match against Eastern New Mexico. Mother Nature had other ideas, however.

The two schools began doubles play, but were interrupted by rain. The match was deemed a rain out.

The Lady Wildcats will begin a series of matches against Division 2 rivals starting Friday. On Friday, the team will travel to Austin to compete against S.F. Austin State and Sam Houston State.

Next the women will go to New Braunfels on Saturday to play against St. Edward’s. Then they will travel to San Antonio to play Incarnate Word.

“It’s going to be a hectic start to our spring break,” senior Lacy Johnson said. “But we are very prepared having played all the other Division 1 schools.”

Meanwhile, the ACU men’s team will play in New Braunfels against Lamar on Friday and St. Edward’s on Saturday. The men will then travel with the women’s team to San Antonio to play Incarnate Word.

The men’s team will also travel to College Station on Monday to play against Texas A&M.

“I feel based on our play so far this season we are ready to play against some of our Division 2 rivals,” head tennis coach Hutton Jones said. “Our players have not quit against tougher opponents this spring. I expect us to do very well this weekend.”

Both the men’s and women’s teams competed last Saturday. The teams were expected to play a local opponent but instead competed in an intrasquad match.
