Campus sidewalk needed for student safety

April 16, 2003 by Optimist Reader

As we all know summer has arrived and like bears coming out of hibernation, ACU students are finding any excuse to be outdoors. Despite my un-athletic abilities, I, myself, have taken up jogging.

While this has been a very relaxing activity for me, I have at times been rather frustrated. I go out for a simple run and find myself charging over uneven ground through rocks and weeds, sometimes dodging random structures of concrete. I like to jog. However, I am not a professional cross-country runner. I believe my friend Staci was feeling this same way when she fell on uneven ground during a running class last week.

After several hospital visits and numerous x-rays, Staci found her foot to be badly sprained. Could Staci’s swollen ankle been avoided? I think so.

This campus needs a make over, beginning with sidewalks that reach all around the property. It would not only please my fellow joggers, but I believe walkers, bike riders, and skate boarders would greatly benefit from the change.

If ACU is looking for a way to improve this campus, let us consider laying down some concrete before more students like my friend Staci find themselves lying down on the ground. Until then, you can be sure I will be watching my step.

"Ending my college education early was always the plan for me, but the things that I have been able to see, experience and examine about ACU’s community were not. I have found immense growth in ACU over the past three and a half years, but ACU still has a long road to climb if it wants to keep catering to students as the world changes around them."
