Smith served students more than we realize

April 11, 2003 by Optimist Reader

Jeremy Smith has missed the last three congress meetings.

I chaired those meetings-meaning that I employed the use of a wooden thing that looks like a short hammer, a gavel-in his absences, and at one of those meetings, a congress member told me that since I ran the meeting so well, I should have run for SA President, and I was astonished.

Not astonished that I would receive praise for running a meeting, but that people could say that I had “the right stuff” to be president.

I have never gotten 600 people to forego their spring breaks to serve on student-led mission trips across the country and around the world. Jeremy Smith has.

I have never tossed, turned and lay awake at night wondering if I was working hard enough or how I could better serve the student body of this great school. Jeremy Smith has.

I have never introduced such radical change to an organization that it morphs completely into a truer representative body that not only listens to all students, but also serves as a tool to help fight for things like more holidays; lobby local, state and national governments for reform; and make the pool tables free for all students (have you played?). Jeremy Smith has.

I’ve never gone to a two-hour meeting (7:00-9:00 in the morning) and represented the opinion of students to the top brass of the campus even as it differs from mine in as radical a way as possible. Jeremy Smith has.

I have never stood up for something that I believed in and then fought for it almost to the point of impeachment because I believed that it was the best way to serve the student body, even without the vocal support of my fellow executive officers. Jeremy Smith has.

I do not know what all Jeremy Smith does. I do know that he has never sat in this seat in awe of a person who’s heart is so big for the student body that it would seem it was on the brink of explosion. I have.
