If some lyrics are altered, many more must be as well

October 29, 2003 by Optimist Reader

It is absolutely pathetic that Dr. Reese has taken it upon herself to rewrite a song that is not hers to rewrite.

Roses are beautiful; Jesus himself was beautiful. When he was on the cross dying, he couldn’t get any lower, and he had to be put there by people who were pretty much trampling him to the ground.

When someone does something wrong, having to face the consequences is taking the fall. To say that Jesus didn’t take the fall for us is to deny his sacrifice. He bore all our sins, he took away our consequence of hell, and he took the fall, period. The other line which was changed was also fine the way it was: “And thought of me above all.” This is not putting yourself up on any pedestal; it is simply telling the truth. It is saying his love was so great that he would die for us. Without us, that wouldn’t have been needed. Of course he was thinking about us.

If you’re going to change one song, you’ve got a lot more changing to do. So if you are going to be unfair, be unfair and get busy changing all other songs anyone has a problem with. You can’t do that, or we would have no songs left.

Sing something else; do anything but change a song that is not yours.

I have also talked to many other people who feel it is wrong and inappropriate to have this change. I wonder what the author of the song thinks about people messing with his poetry.
