Sing Song theme to focus on movies: Theme should allow for ideas, chance to ‘dream big’

By Jonathan Smith, Managing Editor

Sing Song will center around movies this year with the theme “Silver Screen.”

Kendall Massey, director of student productions, and the Sing Song co-chairs, Demetrius Collins, senior exercise science major from Odessa; Mollie Mankins, senior marketing major from Crandall; and Katey Earles, senior marketing major from Abilene, met one afternoon with several theme ideas to work with and quickly decided on the movie theme, Massey said.

“After about three minutes, we were pretty sure we liked the movie theme,” Massey said.

Once they selected the broad movie theme, Massey said they brainstormed several more specific themes. They selected “Silver Screen” because it was a theme that creates different imagery for different people, both Massey and Earles said.

“It also gives them some structure for choosing a theme but still lets them have lots of creativity,” Earles said. “Everyone has a favorite movie, or actor, or song, or something that can tie in with a movie theme.”

Earles said they also picked the theme because it was one that the co-chairs could enjoy planning.

“We selected this theme because it was something we could get excited about, and that always makes the show lots more fun for us,” Earles said. “We automatically started spouting out our favorite movies and how much fun it would be to do songs from them.”

Earles stressed the importance of the specific theme, “Silver Screen,” because she said they “wanted to portray what kind of show it would be: a classy, elegant and fun show.”

Massey said he likes the idea of what the theme will bring to Sing Song.

“It’s a neat medium we can bring to the Sing Song stage,” Massey said.

Massey said they are now in the process of developing ideas for what can be done with the theme. One of his ideas includes making Moody Coliseum look like an old-time theatre.

Cost isn’t his main concern right now, Massey said, because they are only in the early planning stage.

“We’re at a point now where we can dream big, then scale back later,” Massey said.
