Weekend visitors boost economy

October 24, 2003 by Kyle Peveto

Each year Homecoming attracts thousands of out-of-town visitors who contribute greatly to the local economy.

On average, ACU’s 1,500 Homecoming visitors spend $176,800 on dining, hotels and various expenditures, according to the Abilene Visitor and Convention Bureau.

Visitors coming to ACU outnumber and outspend McMurry University’s Homecoming attendees, who number over 350 and spend more than $76,000, and the 800 Hardin-Simmons University visitors, who spend $164,000.

The city does not advertise directly for Homecoming but advertises for general tourism, said Nanci Liles, executive director of the Abilene Visitor and Convention Bureau.

“The hotels and restaurants really benefit from all the events,” Liles said.

Hotels near campus fill with reservations up to six months ahead of time, said Mary Ann Whitten, co-owner of the Whitten Inn on Highway 351.

“Our location has a lot to do with it, being right around the corner from ACU,” she said. “Any opportunity we get to advertise with ACU, we always support them fully.”

Visitors spend thousands of dollars in restaurants around the city, especially near campus. Towne Crier, a longtime Wildcat favorite establishment, receives a great influx of alumni reliving some of their most social days.
