Cats smack SFA: Women win all doubles flights in 7-2 victory

February 22, 2004 by Joel Weckerly

The women’s tennis team took down another Division I opponent Friday when it sunk Stephen F. Austin, 7-2, at Eager Tennis Pavilion.

The Wildcats’ only losses went to junior Rachel Taylor at No. 1 singles and sophomore Joy Israel at No. 6 singles.

The victory improved ACU’s record to 9-2 on the season.

“I thought we played well,” assistant coach John Walker said. “We’ve been working a lot at improving doubles and we went 3-0. We were more aggressive there, and that’s what we were mainly concerned with.”

Walker said beating a Division I opponent wasn’t extraordinary for the competitive women’s team.

“It’s definitely a credit to them, but our girls expect to win,” he said. “They’re used to winning, and when they get down, they don’t give up or throw in the towel.”

The women’s team will receive a well-deserved break after playing three matches in four days and don’t return to action until March 5 when ACU plays host for Collin Community College and Eastern New Mexico.
