Softball splits with MSU Tuesday: Team to compete at St. Ed’s tournament this weekend

February 20, 2004 by Brian Roe

By Brian Roe, Sports Writer

ACU continued its winning ways Tuesday night splitting a pair of games with Midwestern State in a double header at Wells Field.

The Wildcats improve their record to 4-2 on the young season, while Midwestern State drops its first game of the season, giving the team a 5-1 record in 2004.

The Indians of Midwestern State claimed the first game 5-1, spraying 10 hits around Wells Field. Midwestern’s Brittany Wilson picked up the complete game win by allowing only one run and eight hits while striking out five ACU batters.

Junior pitcher Lacey Beaston also tossed a complete game, allowing four earned runs while striking out two Midwestern batters.

Junior Lanessa Glover created the only run of the game, leading off the sixth inning with a single for ACU and scoring the lone run for the Wildcats when junior catcher Ashley Whittenberg knocked an RBI single. Freshman Allison Crouse also picked up a pair of hits for the Wildcats.

The Wild-cats handed the Indians their first loss of the season in game two of the doubleheader, ousting Midwest-ern State 6-4. Sophomore pitcher Heather Cochran picked up the win, pitching a complete game for ACU while allowing only four earned runs.

The Wildcats have produced better pitching so far this season and it’s helping in the standings.

ACU head coach Chantiel Wilson tells about the importance of pitching in softball.

“There are so many good hitters in college softball the pitching really needs to be a strength,” Wilson said.

Junior Katie Bryan hit her first home run of the season and drove in three runs in the victory for ACU. Crouse again collected a pair of hits for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats return to the field Friday competing in the St. Edwards tournament in Austin today through Sunday. ACU will also host the Diamond Dame Classic at Wells Field on Feb. 26-28.

"Ending my college education early was always the plan for me, but the things that I have been able to see, experience and examine about ACU’s community were not. I have found immense growth in ACU over the past three and a half years, but ACU still has a long road to climb if it wants to keep catering to students as the world changes around them."
