Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-Ill.) energy policy is mostly based on reducing the amount of foreign oil imported into the country by supporting companies that pursue creating and using alternative fuels. He plans to invest $150 billion over 10 years to “advance the next generation of biofuels and fuel infrastructure,” and plans to reduce oil consumption by at least 35 percent by 2030.
Obama’s healthcare plan would amend the current system, but it is not a government run universal healthcare plan. Although his opponent continues to criticize his healthcare plan, Obama claims that his plan is focused on making healthcare affordable for everyone. For the more than 47 million Americans who are uninsured, Obama plans to create an affordable, no-questions-asked plan similar to the plan available to all federal employees. For those who prefer a private insurance plan, Obama will create a “National Health Insurance Exchange” program to make sure private plans are not over-charging citizens.
Obama often touts that he has opposed the Iraq war “from the beginning.” Obama believes that there is no military solution to the violence in Iraq and believes a phased withdrawal of troops engaged in combat operations by 2009 will pressure the Iraqi government to step up.
Obama claims he will cut income taxes by $1,000 for working families and supports the ability of workers to organize unions. Obama opposed the Bush tax cuts, which he claims only cut taxes for the wealthy and wants to provide middle class American with tax relief. Obama said he will support Fair Trade policies and companies that do not outsource jobs abroad. He also wants to implement a federal program that alerts citizens of the risk involved in credit cards and said he will help establish a Credit Card Bill of Rights.
