ACU tastes success at Dr. Pepper

By Michael Freeman, Assistant Sports Editor

Three ACU women’s track and field athletes qualified for the NCAA Division II outdoor championship meet at the Dr. Pepper Invitational on Saturday in Waco.

Linda Brivule, Katy Abner and Kelli Clements all earned spots. Brivule finished second in the javelin with a throw of 149 feet, 2 inches. Abner jumped for a second place finish in the pole vault with a mark of 12-1.50. And Clements ended in first place in shot put with a throw of 44-9.00.

“She’s getting a little better,” said head coach Don Hood of Brivule. “This is really early for her; she’s used to competing in the summer and fall.”

Hayley Garner also won the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:36.07. Tyler Fleet took both the discus and the hammer throw, throwing for at least 169 feet in both competitions.

ACU hosts the ACU Triangular at Elmer Gray Stadium on Friday. The meet will feature area high schools, North Texas, Baylor and ACU. Baylor may bring its powerhouse men’s 4×400 relay team of Trey Harts, Marcus Boyd, Justin Boyd and LeJerald Betters, a foursome that has run the best indoor time in the world this year.

“Baylor is bringing the horses,” Hood said. “It’s going to be really good.”
