Basketball teams fall to Tarleton State: Women fail to clinch playoff spot, men eliminated from postseason contention

Women’s Basketball

Tarleton State defeated ACU Wednesday night 73-59, keeping their postseason chances alive while preventing the Wildcats from clinching a spot in the Lone Star Conference Post-Season Tournament.

The TexAnns improved to 14-11 overall and 5-5 in the LSC South Division while ACU fell to 15-9 overall and 6-3 in division play. ACU remains one game ahead of Angelo State for second place in conference and can clinch a postseason spot with one more win or a Texas A&M-Kingsville loss. The Wildcats next game will be Saturday against Midwestern State at McMurry University due to Sing Song.

The Wildcats fell behind by as many as 11 points in the first half and trailed at halftime 33-26. ACU was unable to make any comeback in the second half as Tarleton State stretched a seven-point lead to an 18-point advantage in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

Center Audrey Maxwell-Lively led the Wildcats with a game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds to record her 12th double-double of the season. Forwards Jody and Jamie Meyer were the only other Wildcats in double figures as Jody finished with 15 points and four rebounds and Jamie finished with 11 points and three rebounds. Guard Kat Kundmueller led the team with three assists.

Tarleton State center JoAnne Jones finished with 20 points and a game-high 14 rebounds while guard Sonya Sundberg finished with 15 points, eight assists and three 3-pointers. Every player on the TexAnns roster scored and finished with at least one rebound.

The Wildcats game against Midwestern State will begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Men’s Basketball

The ACU men’s basketball team lost to Tarleton State 80-64 Wednesday night, ending their chances of making the postseason tournament.

The Wildcats fell to 8-15 overall and 2-7 in the Lone Star Conference South Division and will miss the postseason for the ninth time in the past ten years. The Texans moved to 17-8 overall and 5-5 in division play and have won four-straight LSC games since the Wildcats defeated them on Jan. 27.

After leading 36-28 after halftime, ACU cut the lead to five to start the second half; however, the Texans extended their lead to 15 after going on a 16-6 run. ACU’s pulled within eight with four minutes remaining in the game, but Tarleton State went on an 11-3 run to close the game.

Tarleton State outscored the Wildcats by eight points each half, shooting 51.6 percent to ACU’s 35.5 percent. The Wildcats managed just six three pointer on 27 attempts while the Texans went 8-18 from behind the 3-point line. Guard Dante Adams finished with a game-high 19 points. Forward Dejan Sencanski finished with 13 points and seven rebounds while guard Ean Wagner was the only other Wildcat in double figures with 10 points.

Forward Eric Williams who finished with 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds led the Texans. Guards Cortney Hill, Wale Ogunoye and Jeremiah Wilson all finished in double figures while the Texans had seven players scoring eight points or more.

The Wildcats next game will be against Midwestern State at 4 p.m. at McMurry University.
