Tournament to benefit charity

March 27, 2009 by Erin Mangold

By Erin Mangold, Student Reporter

A 3-on-3 basketball tournament will take place in Bennett Gymnasium to benefit Habitat for Humanity on April 4.

Dr. David Dillman, professor of political science, was on the local Habitat for Humanity Board in the past. ACU organizations always have tried to find some way to contribute to the cause, he said.

One year, Gamma Sigma Phi sponsored a 3-day softball tournament. Prior to that, GSP members raised money by riding their bikes cross-country. This year, basketball teams can pay $30 to enter the 3-on-3 tournament, with all proceeds benefiting Habitat for Humanity.

According to its Web site, Habitat for Humanity International “is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. HFHI seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.”

The organization, along with help from people all over the world, has provided more than 1.5 million people in different community’s safe, decent and affordable shelter.

The tournament will contribute to its cause. Even the smallest contribution makes a difference, Dillman said.

“If we can even raise enough money to help put in a door or just a window, we’ve helped,” he said.

This is the second year the 3-on-3 tournament has been at ACU. Last year, 10 teams signed up, said Gloria Fields, local Habitat for Humanity board’s secretary of treasury. This year, they are hoping for at least 10 or more teams, she said.

Teams are divided into a female division and a male division, but Fields said if students express enough interest in co-ed teams, tournament officials might consider allowing it.

Prizes to be awarded to winners have not yet been decided, but last year, prizes included an athletic bag, a basketball per team member and T-shirts for everyone.

Fields said the tournament begins at 9 a.m. and will go as long as needed. Sign up by Friday at Dillman’s office in the Hardin Administration Building, Room 220.
