Cats dig in for weekend

August 28, 2009 by Ryan Cantrell

The Wildcats’ volleyball team will open the season today facing some tough competition. They travel to Nebraska to play in the Nebraska-Omaha Showcase, where they will face four solid teams.

The Wildcats play their first match against Truman State at 2:30 p.m. today. Truman State is coming off an incredible season in which they advanced to the National Semifinals.
They finished the season ranked fourth by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. They enter the new season ranked ninth and are expecting to have another great season.
This is the eighth consecutive season Truman State has entered the season ranked in the top 10.  The Wildcats should see strong competition from Truman State.

The second match of the day is against Nebraska-Omaha. The Mavericks are looking to improve after a mediocre 16-16 season last year. They are serving as the host school in a showcase that includes nine teams and 18 matches.
The Wildcats will have two matches on Saturday as well. The first match will be against the Lions of North Alabama.

The Lions are looking to reclaim the Gulf South Conference Championship this season and return to the NCAA tournament.  North Alabama is returning three starters and looking to improve on a 24-11 record from last season.
The Wildcats’ final match of the Showcase will be against Minnesota State, Mankato. The Mavericks look strong entering the season, with high expectations as well. They start the season just on the outside of the top 25 poll. They received 39 votes, which put them as the top unranked team in the country. They finished last season with a 20-11 record and 15-5 record in their conference.
