Wildcats need consistency

September 22, 2009 by Austin Gwin

The Wildcat soccer team has a chance to restore its winning record when the ladies play Texas-Permian Basin on Tuesday. After a three-game losing streak put them under .500, the ‘Cats rebounded with a huge win against Dallas Baptist, giving them an even 3-3 record.

The Wildcat offense finally got on track with three goals in the game against DBU, matching their goal total for the season. The offense’s issues weren’t isolated to these six games, either; they started last season.

ACU soccer is in its third full season. The Wildcats have had their share of breakout offensive performances but never consistently. Is this win just another flash in the pan, or has Head Coach Casey Wilson finally figured out how to get his offense to score?

Goalie Crissy Lawson has been the Wildcats’ knight in shining armor. The Wildcats have three wins because of her stellar play. Without her, the Wildcats would be dead in the water.

Last year, the Wildcats were shut out in six of their 10 ties and losses, and scored only one goal in each of the other four. Yet, in all the losses, they gave up two goals only once, and that was in the playoffs. Until the playoff game, in which ACU lost 3-1, every Wildcat loss was by a single goal.

All of these stats say great things about Lawson and the rest of the Wildcat defense. If the offense could have just shown up a few times, the Wildcats could have made a run in the playoffs. True, this is only their third season, but the defense is great. Why can’t the offense catch up?

The trend continues this season. The Wildcats have been shut out twice and scored only one goal in the third game. In the two wins besides that in the DBU game, ACU won by a score of 1-0. I hope the three goals the Wildcats put in last game will be a spark that lights a fire.

If that’s not the case, then jump on board the Crissy Lawson ship and hope she is able to continue carrying the Wildcats.
