Wildcat tennis frustrated at home tournament

October 9, 2009 by Austin Gwin

Being the host of a tournament does not guarantee success, as the ACU men’s tennis team discovered during the ITA South Central Regional Championships on Friday and Saturday.

ACU’s best chance for the championship, seventh-seeded Eldad Campbell, fell in a surprising first-round defeat. Other first- and second-round knockouts included Cody McCarty, Luke Hawk and Brett Proctor.

The Wildcats failed to advance any players past the quarterfinals, although John Strahl made it that far before being eliminated, advancing the farthest in the tournament. Another Wildcat, Bryan Joiner, advanced to the third round, but other than those two, ACU made a disappointing showing on their home court.

Washburn’s Ryan Ward took home the championship after beating Incarnate Word’s Francisco Segura in a 10-5 super tiebreaker.
