Wildcats dominate all-Conference football team

November 20, 2009 by Jeff Craig

The tremendous success seen by the football team as a unit this season has been complemented by a myriad of outstanding individual efforts as well. The Wildcats had 21 players named to the Lone Star Conference all-Conference team last week.

The group, headlined by 2009 Offensive Lineman of the Year Tony Washington and Co-Defensive Back of the Year Tony Harp, had more players named to the team than any other LSC school. The Tarleton State Texans had 14 players named to the team, while Midwestern State and Texas A&M-Kingsville each had 10 honorees.

Among the 21 all-Conference selections were 10 first-team selections, including Harp and Washington. On the offense, fullback Justin Andrews, wide receiver Edmund Gates and offensive guard Royland Tubbs joined Washington on the first team.

Harp was joined on the defensive side by defensive end Aston Whiteside, nose guard Marvin Jones and linebackers Kevin Washington and Courtney Lane on the first team. Punt returner Kendrick Johnson was also named to the first-team special teams unit.

The Wildcats also had seven players named to the all-Conference second team. Running backs Daryl Richardson and Reggie Brown were joined on the second-team offense by tight end Trey Simeone and center Matt Webber. Linebacker Fred Thompson was the only player named to the second-team defense. The special teams unit also made a strong appearance on the second team with punter Mark Sprague and deep snapper Cody Brown.

To top it off, four players received an honorable mention: offensive guard Levi Wolfe, offensive tackle Trevis Turner, cornerback Drew Cuffee and safety Major Culbert.

With 21 selections, the Wildcats’ received the second-most number of awards in school history that, along with a No. 1 national ranking, makes this a history-making season.
