Golf and Baseball start 2010 nationally ranked

January 12, 2010 by Special Contributor

By Zane Goggans

A new semester brings new rankings for ACU athletics. While many students will focus on spring intramurals, the baseball and golf teams will be focusing on their upcoming seasons — and staying on top of the rankings.

Wildcat golf is ranked 19th to begin the season, after a fifth-place finish in Florida last semester. With clubs in full swing in March, the Wildcats will look to improve that rank, starting at the Coyote Classic in San Bernardino, Calif.

The ACU baseball team is also sure to bring the heat this semester. After finishing 44-19 last season, the Wildcats have earned the 13th spot in the polls, and Head Coach Britt Bonneau is leading his team toward a promising season.

Last season, senior Preston Vancil threw 108 strikeouts, and junior Zach Sneed is looking to repeat the performance as one of four starting pitchers this season.

“I have never been a part of a team like this before,” Sneed said. “We really want to win.”

Practice began Sunday, and the team will play its first game in a four-game series against the Harding Bisons beginning Feb. 6.
