Honors murder mystery promises classy fun

February 4, 2010 by Chelsea Hackney

For students who like a little drama in their life, the Honors College is offering an evening of murder and mystery – a murder mystery, in fact, titled Double Bubble, Toil and Trouble.

“It’s not really a serious thing,” said Honors student Amber Deschamps, junior biology major from Liberty Hill and the author of the play. “There are all sorts of shenanigans. Students should expect to eat some really good food and laugh a lot.”

The show is a “family drama,” and the scene is a birthday party for wealthy 18-year-old twins Bartholomew and Guinevere Hart, said Bethany Scroggins, recruiter and events programmer for the Honors College. Neither Scroggins nor Deschamps revealed much more for fear of giving away the secret.

This is the second time the Honors College has organized a dinner theatre-style murder mystery; however, unlike last year, this show will be a one-night only performance.

The actors will perform in the Williams Performing Arts Center atrium instead of the Hunter Welcome Center, and the show is not for prospective students. The cast of 11 is larger than last year, partly because of the high demand for roles, Scroggins said.

One of the goals of this year’s show is to immerse the audience in the story, Scroggins said. Because the birthday party is a formal event, guests are asked to dress up for dinner, and a live string quartet will further set the highbrow tone. Some audience members might even become part of the action.

“It’s going to be a very classy occasion,” Scroggins said. “I hope we run out of seats – which could happen.”

Although Scroggins said Honors students are the targeted audience, the Honors College will advertise as much as possible with myACU ads, flyers and a sneak preview performance immediately after Chapel on Monday.

The actual performance is Feb. 26 at 6:33 p.m., which happens to be sunset that day, Scroggins said. Tickets are $10 per person or $15 for two, which covers dinner and the show. Students can purchase tickets in the Honors College office in Zellner Hall or in the McGlothlin Campus Center after Chapel starting Monday.

Royce Clough and Jael Morel have been named as Mr. and Miss ACU for the class of 2022, a traditional honor voted on by the student body and awarded to two members of each graduating class.
