Women’s tennis blasts Tarleton 8-1

March 12, 2010 by Ryan Cantrell

The Wildcats cruised to an 8-1 victory against No. 21 Tarleton State in Stephenville on Wednesday night.

This marks the team’s sixth straight win, and the Wildcats improve to 13-2 on the season; the TexAnns fall to 8-5.

The Wildcats won the first three doubles matches to take a quick 3-0 lead. Dina Pavlin and Jaclyn Walker entered the match ranked No. 6 in the nation in doubles, and they lived up to the ranking, winning narrowly, 9-8. Julia Mongin and Cassie Carver won in doubles 8-6, while Hannah Kelley and Lauren White defeated Adriana Jaskova and Carole Julen 8-4.

“We went out there like any other match. Tarleton is a solid team,” Pavlin said. “We were under some adversity because we were playing against 35 mph winds. We played pretty well though and came together as a team.”

Walker won singles in straight games, 6-0 and 6-0. Mongin played in the top spot for the Wildcats and defeated Jaskova 6-1 and 6-1.

Pavlin, Carver and Kelley all picked up wins for the Wildcats in singles as well. Pavlin won 5-2 and then by default in the second set. Carver won 6-1 and 7-6; Kelley won 6-4 and 6-2.

The only singles play game the Wildcats lost was at the sixth seed. Lauren White fell to Evgeniya Prokofeva 6-4 and 6-4.

The Wildcats will continue the season Friday in Dallas where they will take on the SMU Mustangs. The Wildcats will play a second match this weekend against Northeastern State in Dallas on Saturday.
