The Dallas Cowboys selected Dez Bryant as their first-round choice in the NFL draft last week.
Bryant is a highly talented wide receiver from Oklahoma State; however, although he was arguably the best receiver in this year’s draft and should make an instant impact with Dallas, he made news recently for something that happened before the draft.
In a heated question session, Jeff Ireland, the general manager for the Miami Dolphins, asked Bryant if his mother was a prostitute. Ireland defended himself, saying it is his job to find out as much as he can about a player he is considering drafting. Ireland later apologized to Bryant about the question, but the fact remains he asked it.
What I want to know is what this question has to do with Bryant or his ability to catch a football. Even if the question was not highly offensive to Bryant, which I expect it was, it was not a relevant question. It had nothing to do with the Dolphins’ interest in Bryant.
Bryant answered all of the questions, telling Ireland his mother was not a prostitute. But these questions should not even be thought of because it is not anyone else’s business. Even if Bryant’s mother was a prostitute, what would that change? The Miami Dolphins are interested in Bryant because of his athletic ability. Any other question about Dez’s family or personal life should not be asked.
I hope Bryant will go on to a great NFL career with the Cowboys. He has the size and the talent to become a great NFL receiver. However, the NFL has to do a better job regulating what NFL teams can ask about players. Bryant was treated terribly. The NFL needs to make a change so something like this does not happen again. NFL prospects should be treated like businessmen. That is the hard sports truth.
