Wildcats take series against ASU for second time in ACU softball history

April 11, 2010 by Ryan Cantrell

The Wildcats took two of three from the Angelo State Rambelles this past weekend. ACU won the first game 4-0 and dropped the second game 9-0, before taking the series 7-5.

“I think our girls came out ready to play. They played their game, they were intense and focused, but they were also having fun,” said Head Coach Chantiel Wilson. “At the plate, we had much better at-bats, and our defense was behind our pitchers. Our pitchers threw great, and I am just really proud of the whole team.”

In the first game, pitcher Shelby Hall led the Wildcats as she got her eighth win of the season, shutting out the Rambelles 4-0. Hall held ASU to five hits through seven innings, with four strikeouts. ACU found all of its offense in the third inning when Missy Mendoza hit a grand slam. Caitlin Nabors, Shawna Barrow and Stephanie Tingle were able to load the bases for Mendoza.

In the second game, ASU came back with vengeance, scoring nine runs on 12 hits. The Wildcats were able to get seven hits but could not get on the board, leaving 12 runners on base. ASU cruised to a 9-0 victory.

In the rubber match, the Wildcats used a big fourth inning to win 7-5. ACU was able to score all seven runs in the fourth inning. The Wildcats loaded the bases when Candice Miller hit a double off the wall, scoring two runs. Nancy Sawyers came up next and launched a three-run home run to make the score 5-2. ACU was not done yet; they added two more runs off a double by Jenny Kulp. ASU answered, getting three runs back off Hall in the next inning. The Wildcats brought in Brittany Rexroat, who closed the game and earned her first save of the season.

“We hit the ball really well this weekend. That is something you always have to do against Angelo because they are a good hitting team,” Sawyers said. “I thought we capitalized well when we had runners on and utilized our base runners better than in previous games.”

The series victory is ACU’s first against Angelo State since 2006 and only the second in its program’s history. The Wildcats improve to 3-6 in division play and 18-24 overall. The Rambelles fell to 7-4 in division play and 33-9 overall.

The Wildcats will continue conference play at 2 p.m. Friday in Stephenville. ACU will have a three-game series against Tarleton State.
