SALT applications due Friday

September 8, 2010 by Bailey Neal

Applications to join Student Action Leadership Team are due Friday, September 10 in the SLVR.

Student Action Leadership Team, or SALT, is open to any and all ACU students. According to the ACU website, SALT’s “main goal” is to build relationships through service in order to fulfill our Christian mission.

Kate Huggins, senior biochemistry major from Abilene, explains that SALT strives to lead students on the ACU campus to service.

“For me, I think it’s a lot about being in a community with other people that care about service. There’s a lot of encouragement and accountability that comes with being in a community all working towards the same goal,” Huggins said.

Rebecca Tapia, senior psychology major from Los Angeles, Californa, agrees that the community of volunteers involved with SALT is one of a kind.

“We all love to serve. Being with people who have like passions is amazing,” Tapia said.

Huggins said that being a part of SALT has given her leadership skills and helped her, as a senior, with her resume and interviews.

“I am currently interviewing for med school, and when the questions come up about volunteer opportunities, I have plenty to talk about,” Huggins said.

Once you have received and returned a SALT application, the SLVR will help you set up an interview time.

“It’s more like just visiting with a couple of the officers to make sure salt is a good fit for you and that you can be committed to the group.” Huggins said.

“We review every applicant ad, basically, we don’t have a cap, but we are trying to look for students who aren’t too involved in other things. We don’t want them to be over-commited,” Tapia said.

The leaders of SALT are looking for students who want to serve with their ministry teams, as listed on the SALT website, and who want to gain leadership and service experience.

“We’ve been in transition to communal leadership, as in making relationships with our community partners, and not just serving in a lot of different agencies, but focusing on our 6 different areas,” Tapia said.

“The awareness of opportunity for service (from SALT) is one of the best ways the VSLR gets the news about service opportunities out to ACU. You will always be connected. There will always be opportunity,” Huggins said.

SALT’s first campus-wide event is set to take place in September.
