Schubert to speak in Homecoming Chapel

October 8, 2010 by Matthew Woodrow

ACU alumni and campus visitors will head to Moody Coliseum at 10:45 a.m. Saturday for this year’s Homecoming Chapel.

In charge of planning the event were Jama Cadle, assistant director of Alumni Relations and university events, Samantha Adkins, senior Alumni Relations officer, and Grant Boone, Alumni Relations officer. The Alumni Association and the Alumni Advisory Board helped plan the event also.

The Alumni Advisory Board is compiled of 30 members who meet biannually in February and August to plan and promote major ACU alumni-focused events, including  reunion dinners, alumni award presentations and Homecoming.

This year the board selected Dr. Doug Peters (’80), president of this year’s reunion class and a member of the Alumni Advisory Board, to emcee Homecoming Chapel. ACU President Dr. Phil Schubert will be the keynote speaker.

Anyone on campus for Homecoming is invited to attend. Seating could be tight, however, between Moody’s maximum capacity of 4,250 and the large number expected to go straight from the Homecoming Parade, which ends at Coliseum Way in front of Moody, to Chapel.

“Usually a lot of families come to Homecoming Chapel,” Adkins said. “Especially parents whose children are doing stuff in the parade.”

The Homecoming Parade starts at 9:30 a.m. and is expected to last about an hour. Homecoming Chapel is scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m. but will be pushed back if the parade takes longer than expected. Cadle said Chapel itself will last about 45 minutes and is not expected to run as long as in past years.

“This Chapel is very flexible, but we don’t think we’ll have to delay very long,” Cadle said. “The parade itself has always been very short, usually only about an hour.”

Cadle said Chapel attendance is expected to include a large number of alumni from the reunion year, as well as ACU students and prospective students visiting for Homecoming.

However, students who come to Homecoming Chapel will not receive credit for attending, said Kathy Hogan, administrative coordinator for Spiritual Life and Chapel Programs
