University Chorale offers class

November 10, 2010 by Meiqi Zhang

The University Chorale is looking for students who enjoy singing and meeting new friends to join the Chorale for the spring semester.

The University Chorale will offer a class, MPEV 202-01, for credit or no credit. Students who choose the for-credit option will pay regular tuition fees and get a transcript grade. Students who choose the no-credit option will only pay a $75 fee.

Students interested in the class should talk to their adviser to register. The class will meet from 1 to 1:50 p.m. MWF.

The class will teach the basics of singing and sight reading music. Students will learn many different types of music from classical to Broadway jazz to folk music.

Dr. Sean Pullen, director of choral activities, said there are many benefits to joining the choir.

“First of all, you get to sing. Also it’s a great social activity,” Pullen said. “It’s a great way for students to meet other students who have common interests and have a lot of fun.”

University Chorale currently has about 50 students, most of whom are women. The department is hoping more men will join this year.

“The University Chorale is what we call an ‘all-come choir.’ Basically everybody who wants to sign up for the University Chorale can sign up to be a group,” Pullen said. “It is a mixed choir. We have a lot of girls in the group we like to encourage men to join us, so we have more of a balance.”

Catie Baird, sophomore biology major from Austin, joined the choir last year as a freshman having never been in a choir.

“I met a lot of people and we had a lot of fun together, Baird said. “We always sing and also have a choir retreat, we play games, have devotionals and watch movies together when we are on the retreat.”

Emily Jones, sophomore management major from Austin, said she was in choir for one year in high school. She knew she wanted to be in the Chorale at ACU.

“I have a big love for music, it’s a really cool community, and you get to share your voice and connect with people,” Jones said. ” It helps me get to know people which is really good. Because most people in our choir are freshmen, it helps make connections across the classes.”
