Golf adds two new faces for 2011

December 3, 2010 by Brandon Tripp

ACU signed two golfers from Arkansas Baptist High School in Little Rock this week. Classmates Corbin Renner and Luke Carpenter will continue to be teammates when they join the Wildcat golf team in fall 2011.

Among the top Division II links programs, ACU’s golf team finished ranked fifth in the nation at the close of the 2010 fall season. Coach Mike Campbell, ACU alumnus who has headed the Wildcat golf team since 2005, said he is excited about these two signings.

“They’re both really good players, and I think they are both really good fits for ACU,” Campbell said. “They are going to mesh with the team really well, and I hope they will come in and compete for spots in the top five.”

Corbin Renner is a three-time all-state golfer, leading Arkansas Baptist to three state championships. Having played on varsity all four years, Renner won the Arkansas State Farm Championship in 2008 and 2010. Renner averaged 72 strokes per round in 2010.

“He’s a great player and will be an awesome asset to the team,” Campbell said.

Luke Carpenter is following in the footsteps of his twin brothers, Wildcat sophomores Alex and Adam who were part of last year’s ACU golf team that won the 2010 Lone Star Conference Championship.

Like Renner, Luke has been on his high school’s varsity golf team since he was a freshman and has helped his school capture the Arkansas State Championship three times. He was the individual state champion as a junior, is a four-time all-state performer and won the District Championship in 2009. He was selected to represent Arkansas Baptist as the Wendy’s High School Winner and is a finalist for the State Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. Luke averaged a lean 70 strokes per round in 2010.

“It’s going to be really cool,” Alex Carpenter said. “I’m really excited to get back to the way things used to be.”

“It will be just like growing up, just like high school again,” Adam Carpenter said.
