Pizza My Heart

February 4, 2011 by Bailey Neal

So school is still closed, and ACU students are still out of the classroom. While the temperature continues to drop and the roads become even icier, my roommates and I have begun to go absolutely stir-crazy. While we love playing in the snow as much as our elementary-aged neighbors, there is only so much we could take before venturing out into Abilene, craving adventure- and pizza.

During last year’s snow days, we frequented Joe’s Pasta, Pizza and Subs on Treadaway, eating lunch there both days we were released from classes. Joe’s closed shop both Tuesday and Wednesday due to the icy conditions, but I was sure to call first thing Thursday morning to make sure they were again open for business.

Something about pizza on such a cold day warms more than just my stomach. The staff at Joe’s is always friendly, conversing and joking with nearly every customer that walks in. The pizza, in my opinion, is the best in Abilene, and the low price for two slices, a side salad, and a drink makes me feel less guilty about eating every single bite of my meal, even after I grow full.

The only downfall of Joe’s pizza is what I like to call the ‘Chic-Fil-A phenomenon’ – when the most intense cravings for your favorite food inevitably happen on Sunday’s – when the restaurant is closed. For this, I have two remedies. One is to drive to Sam’s club and purchase a pizza from the bakery there. Something about the crust and the cheese is most similar to Joe’s, though not as good. My only other recommendation is that you wait until Monday to get your pizza fix. It’s well worth it.
