Historical Fiction For The Summer

May 17, 2011 by Dave Smith

For your summer reading list, you may be wary of vampires and other folklore that has been the main genre of popularity on store bookshelves. Perhaps historical fiction is something you’ve contemplated reading over the next few months. If so, Penguin Books’ My Name Is Mary Sutter could be the ticket for you. The book follows the life of ficticious Mary Sutter from being a midwife in the 1800s to being thrust into the medical field of battle during the Civil War, learning how to not only amputate limbs but also face diseases that doctors had never seen. Along the way, Sutter encounters President Lincoln, Dorothea Dix and other historical figures. For more insight into the book, KACU’s Dave Smith spoke with the author of this title Robin Oliveira.
