The Freshman Follies acts will debut their first performance tonight as a part of Family Weekend.
The event, which includes acts performed solely by freshmen, will be held in Cullen Auditorium. Performances will run tonight at 8 p.m. and again tomorrow at 1, 3:15 and 8 p.m.
“Freshman Follies is a musical variety show put on entirely by freshman,” Tom Craig, director of student productions, said. “It’s groups from residence halls to people with special and unique talents coming together to create acts that weave together to form a show.”
Craig said this year’s Follies theme is “Light, Camera, Follies!”
“It will be a take on movie themes,” he said. “So, a lot of the acts will have some sort of tie into a movie concept.”
Rodney Johnson, freshman political science major from Odessa, has been directing Mabee Hall’s third north Follies act.
“Our theme is ‘Mabee Hall: the Hall Worth Fighting For,'” Johnson said, adding that his group plans on catching the audience’s attention by just having fun and being silly.
Traditionally, Freshman Follies has been an event designed to promote student involvement.
“Freshman Follies is an introduction to activity on campus,” Craig said. “This is the first time freshmen really get involved in some sort of organized campus activity, and they can learn what is available and what’s on campus for them to take advantage of.”
Craig also said the show aids in building relationships.
“Ultimately they get to experience student life in a concentrated dose. While they’re doing that, they’re participating with their friends, so they’re strengthening relationships all at the same time.”
Johnson said he believes practicing with his hall mates has given them more opportunity for community.
“Now that we’re around each other most of the time, it makes us more comfortable. Now our hall is a lot closer than what we were.”
Tickets for the show may be purchased today in the campus center until 3 p.m. Students with an ID can buy a ticket at a discounted rate of five dollars. Additionally, tickets may be purchased online for $10.
