‘Cats, Lady Javelinas to face off

February 20, 2012 by Natalie Goin

With the Lone Star Conference post-season tournament on the line, the women’s basketball team prepares to take on Texas A&M-Kingsville Sunday night in Moody Coliseum.

Both teams desperately need a win to in order to secure a spot in the tournament. The Lady Javelinas are currently ranked eighth in the LSC rankings, while the Wildcats have fallen to tenth. Only eight out of the 11 teams receive the opportunity to play post-season.

Coming off of two critical wins against Eastern New Mexico and Incarnate Word this week, the ‘Cats have an intense change in momentum that may be enough edge over Texas A&M-Kingsville. After a season of disappointment, this may be the chance the Wildcats are desperate for.

If ACU pulls off a win Sunday night, it will be a huge opportunity to move up in the conference rankings. After Wednesday night’s 76-59 game against Incarnate Word, the ‘Cats are only 1.5 games behind Texas A&M-Kingsville, and a playoff berth.

Freshman center Paige Parliament credits the recent victories to the team working together in a new way.

“We have a new confidence in each other,” Parliament said. “We have been looking for each other and getting that extra pass in. We have to work to get our teammates the opportunity to score.”

Parliament also mentioned that a change in the defense has been very effective.

“We’ve been playing with a better zone defense. It’s helped us to get that edge over the other team,” Parliament said.

In order to win this weekend, the ‘Cats are going to have to be extremely physical with the Lady Javelinas. Consistency will also be key, as head coach Shawna Lavender has mentioned all season.

“We have to play the whole 40 minutes,” Lavender said. Lavender also puts a huge emphasis on her team taking one game at a time.

The Wildcats will return to action this weekend, as they take on the Texas A&M-Kingsville Lady Javelinas Sunday at 2 p.m. in Moody Coliseum.
