Strong vocal performance and unified choreography are essential in each Sing Song act. However, costume design is just as important to those directing the act.
The 14 acts in Sing Song 2012 vary greatly from Egyptians to fireflies, and each group put a lot of effort into their costumes.
Spencer Goudeau, senior english major from Colorado Springs, Colo., directs the men of Gamma Sigma Phi, or Hercules in this year’s Sing Song. Directors were required to somehow connect their theme with the overall theme of Sing Song, which was ‘Wild at Heart’ this year.
“[Hercules] just kinda popped into my mind, probably a year ago during Sing Song and started getting bigger from there,” Goudeau said. “I think it’s perfect because there’s nobody more wild on earth than Hercules.”
Goudeau says he is very happy with how GSP’s costumes turned out.
“I think it’s the best we’ve had in a couple of years,” Goudeau. “I think they are more colorful than we have had in the past.”
Last year, GSP was civil war soldiers.
This year, the women of Alpha Kai Omega were awarded with originality at Friday night’s performance. Part of this judging includes costume design. Kaios were paper dolls.
Leah Cameron, junior family studies major from Dallas, came up with the idea for paper dolls.
“It just kinda came to me over the summer,” Cameron said. ” I asked my grandma and she was like,’That’s the best theme ever.'”
Their costumes are made entirely out of paper, and the act has a total of six costume changes including changes to their headpieces.
“So I thought, ‘What if our costumes were paper and they were like origami?'” Cameron said. “It all just kinda came to me after I came up with the theme.”
Alpha Kai’s complex costumes took 30 hours to complete.
“We had to cut everything and make everything,” Cameron said. “There was a lot of time put into it. They kept ripping so we’d have to make new ones.”
