Teams rope Mustangs on home courts

April 11, 2012 by Matthew Sloan

Last Wednesday, both the men’s and women’s tennis team played host to conference foe Midwestern State at Eager Tennis Pavilion. Both teams were able to secure a win in their last home match of the season, with the men winning 6-3 and the Lady ‘Cats putting up a perfect 9-0 score.

The men were able to fight off a shaky start in order to secure the victory at 6-3 after dropping two of their three doubles matches to start the contest. The only doubles team that was able to dispose of the Mustangs was the sixth ranked duo of Hans Hach and Nick Plum in a tight one 8-6.

However, once the singles matches begun, the ‘Cats pulled away from their competition, winning five of the six matches in singles competition.

Although many of the matches were close, the Wildcats were able to prevail under pressure and win most of the all-important tiebreakers and send Midwestern State back to Wichita Falls with their tenth loss of the season.

“I think we will be can be even better in the post season,” Michael Morris said. “Once we get our full line up ready to go and perform at a more consistent level.”

The women also took on the Midwestern State Mustangs in their home finale. ACU’s sixth ranked squad did not drop a single set in route to their drubbing of the Mustangs in Eager Tennis Pavilion.

After handling the doubles matches with relative ease, the ‘Cats headed to singles competition with a 3-0 lead and did not look back.

Second ranked Julia Mongin made quick work of her opponent in the first line match, and the rest of her teammates followed suit.

Other highlights of the match include Emily Conrad shutting out her opponent 6-0, 6-0 and Laura Mongin only dropping two games in an easy 6-1, 6-1 victory.

“These wins have given us a lot of confidence going into the post season,” Brittney Reed said.

Both Wildcat teams will head off to California to finish up their regular season with three matches in three days starting on Friday. The Lady’s will play all over the state, ending up in La Jolla, California while the men’s team will get to spend Saturday and Sunday in Malibu for matches against Pepperdine and University of California at San Diego.
