Chorus, Singers to give tryouts

The A Cappella Chorus and the ACU Singers will be holding auditions for the 2012/2013 school year on May 4 from 8 a.m until 4 p.m.

Students who are interested in joining either choir must sign up for an audition with Dr. Sean Pullen, the Director of Choral Activities. A sign up sheet is on his office door, WPAC 132.

The ACU A Cappella Chorus is the oldest A Cappella chorus in the southwest. This group is dedicated to the study and performance of the finest choral literature of all musical eras.

“The A Cappella Chorus sings mostly formal literature, the great composers of Bach, Beethoven, Mozart to the more contemporary composer of formal music,” Pullen said. “We have some lighter pieces as well and try to keep it interesting for the audience.”

Many students who have performed in the chorus feel that it has mad them better singers and helped to progress their future career.

“My favorite thing about the choir is making music with so many talented people at one time,” said Naomi Worley, freshman vocal performance major from Plano. “The chorus also goes on tour every spring to perform concerts in schools, churches and other venues.”

The A Cappella Chorus has between 45-60 members each year.

The ACU Singers is a smaller ensemble which features 15-20 singers that was started last fall. They focus on pieces that were constructed for smaller groups and really aim to help those involved become better singers.

The University Chorale is open to all students regardless of their ability and it counts as a one hour credit course or can be taken as a no-credit class. This class was created to allow ACU students who have a choral background to continue singing without sacrificing their time to go on tours.

“ACU choirs is a very exciting program and we look for ways for people to be involved,” Pullen said. “It’s grown quite a bit.”

Currently all of the university choirs are preparing for their spring concert which will be held May 3, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.
