ACU receives invitation to join Southland Conference; decision to be made this weekend

August 21, 2012 by Edward Isaacs

ACU has officially received an invitation from the Southland Conference to join its league and move to NCAA Division I for all athletic sports.

The ACU Board of Trustees and the administration will further discuss the invitation this weekend when they meet at the Board’s scheduled meeting and decide whether or not ACU will accept the invitation.

If accepted, ACU will hold a press conference Saturday, Aug. 25, at 12:30 p.m. in the Hunter Welcome Center to make the official announcement.

All sports except for football would begin competing in Division I in the 2013-14 school year. Football would join the SLC in 2014 because of previous schedule commitments.

The Southland Conference visited ACU, the University of New Orleans and the University of the Incarnate Word this summer during its process of finding new members for the league. Incarnate Word also received an invitation to join the conference and was officially welcomed to the SLC on Monday.
