Alex Carpenter finishes second at Jones Cup Invitational

February 4, 2013 by Edward Isaacs

Senior all-America golfer Alex Carpenter finished tied for second on Sunday at the Jones Cup Invitational, which is one of the top amateur golf tournaments in the U.S.

Carpenter tied with The University of Alabama junior all-America Cory Whitsett. They both shot three-day totals of 1-under-par 215. University of North Florida all-America Sean Dale finished first with a score of 3-under-par 213.

Whitsett had a four-stroke lead over Carpenter and Dale entering the final round Sunday, but could not maintain the lead. Dale shot 3-under-par 69 on Sunday. He chipped in two birdies on the back nine.

Carpenter had rounds of even-par 72 on Friday and Saturday but posted a 1-under-par 71 on Sunday. He knocked in three birdies and two bogeys on the front nine while recording two birdies and two bogeys on the back nine.

He was within one stroke of the lead with three holes to play on Sunday until he bogeyed the par-4 16th hole (425 yards) to fall to two shots off the lead.

Whitsett could not keep his momentum going Sunday. He recorded a double bogey on the par-5 10th hole and then bogeyed on the par-5 14th hole. He finished at 3-over-par 75 on the day.

Carpenter is currently the 225th-ranked amateur in the world. Whitsett is No. 17 and Dale is ranked No. 60.

The golf team, ranked No. 5 in the nation in the Division II pre-season rankings, opens its spring season Feb. 18-19 at the Incarnate Word Spring Tournament in San Antonio.
