In the RED Fashion Show to raise awareness, combat sex trafficking

March 27, 2013 by Jocelyn Nederhoff

The third annual In the RED Fashion Show will take place April 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the Windsor Hotel and will raise money to fight sex trafficking in Nepal.

The theme for this year’s show is “Fight for Freedom with Fashion.” The event will raise funds for the Red Thread Movement, an initiative of Eternal Threads, a nonprofit dedicated to ending sex slavery. The show is a part of ACU’s annual Justice Week.

The first In the RED Fashion Show was led by Ad/PR alum Whitney Puckett (’11) in 2011. The first show raised more than $1,800 and attracted more than 200 attendees.

Sarah Kelly, senior Ad/PR major from San Antonio and this year’s director, said she hopes the show attracts an even larger audience and is a significant fundraising effort for Eternal Threads and the Red Thread Movement.

“I am most looking forward to raising money for the third year in a row and continuing what Whitney started her senior year,” Kelly said.

Students from multiple departments are using their skills and interests to contribute to the show.

“There are many aspects to the show, from fashion to advertising to marketing. My role has been to focus on the business aspects of the show,” said Cassie Powers, junior marketing and business management major from Cedar Park. “It has been so fun getting other companies involved in the show and its mission.”

Powers said one of the best parts of her experience has been working with a team that is united for a common cause.

“I have a talented and great team to work with, particularly director Sarah Kelly,” she said. “I am so excited to see our efforts come together for the show this year.”

Brenna Jefferies, junior Ad/PR major from Bartonville, is using her talents in fundraising to help with the event.

“I am head of promotions for the show, so I am in charge of raising awareness through social media, selling tickets and teaming up with local businesses,” Jefferies said. “Nikki’s Swirl Shoppe, Pura Vida Salon and Spa and Betty&June are helping us to get the event information out there.”

ACU students will model for the show and will wear clothing from Betty&June Boutique in Abilene and Dillard’s BCBG collection.

Other companies around town will contribute to the event as well. For example, Nikki’s Swirl Shoppe will serve red tart frozen yogurt following the show.

Students may purchase tickets in the Campus Center.

My second year at ACU was full of opportunities that grew me as an individual and a journalist.

In my first year as editor in chief of @acuoptimist, we published six print issues, filmed a 3-hour live election show, and revamped our newscast, all while producing news weekly.

"Ending my college education early was always the plan for me, but the things that I have been able to see, experience and examine about ACU’s community were not. I have found immense growth in ACU over the past three and a half years, but ACU still has a long road to climb if it wants to keep catering to students as the world changes around them."
