Seniors lead Wildcats in Arlington

March 26, 2013 by Daniel Zepeda

The ACU track and field team traveled to Arlington over the weekend to compete in the Bobby Lane Invitational.

The Wildcats were led by seniors Baptiste Kerjean and Lexus Williams who both had great performances.

Freshman Xavier King also had a strong weekend, as he won in his respective event.

“The team did really great and we’re all happy with the results,” senior Lexus Williams said. “We now know where we stand in our races, jumps and throws so we can build on it and hopefully make it to the National Championship.”

Kerjean scored a 202 feet-5 inches (61.69m) in the hammer throw which ranks him second in the nation.

His first-place throw just missed the NCAA automatic qualifying standard by less than two meters, but was more than seven meters better than that of runner-up Chris Stonestreet (54.23m/177-11), who was competing unattached.

“I try to stay unsatisfied to be focused and keep in mind that the national championship is my main individual goal and conference with the team,” senior Baptiste Kerjean said. “My teammates and I are all looking forward to performing at nationals, and it helps us to push ourselves and always stay positive.”

Williams helped the Wildcats out on track in her respective event.

She won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.32 seconds to place her 13th on the national list. King won the 1500m (3:57.73) by two seconds over Cameron’s Janis Pastars (3:59.01) in dramatic fashion.

Seniors Ayesha Rumble and Banjo Jaiyesimi also had strong outings, especially in the 800m.

Rumble recorded a 2:13.39, while Jaiyesimi finished with a 1:53.30 time. Rumble’s time puts her eighth on the national list. Freshman Johnathan Farquharson finished with a 10.61 in the 100m and a 21.58 in the 200m.

“As a whole, ACU went out there to compete and despite the weather we pushed through and had faith in God and came out with some really good results,” Williams said. “We look forward to getting better and bringing ACU more championships.”

The Wildcats return to action next week at the prestigious Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, which take place at Mike A. Myers Stadium March 27 to 30.

"Ending my college education early was always the plan for me, but the things that I have been able to see, experience and examine about ACU’s community were not. I have found immense growth in ACU over the past three and a half years, but ACU still has a long road to climb if it wants to keep catering to students as the world changes around them."
