Students to compete for charities

March 27, 2013 by Linsey Thut

The Freshmen Action Council will be sponsoring a benefit dodgeball tournament from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. April 13.  The winning team will choose the organization to receive the donations, as well as receive free t-shirts.

The tournament, which will take place in Bennett gym, is open to all ACU students, not just freshmen.

Brittany Wollman, freshman social studies education major from San Angelo and member of FAC, said she hopes this event unifies the student body.

“Sometimes it’s easy to get in little factions of freshmen, sophomores, things like that but it’s a good way to make the community that much stronger, and have fun,” Wollman said.

FAC also decided instead of having a set charity to send the proceeds to, they would allow the tournament champions to choose between three predetermined charities.

Christina Wise, junior speech pathology major from San Antonio and co-chair of FAC, said she was excited about letting students have a say in where the money goes.

“I think it’s really neat they are allowing the winner to choose the charity because it allows the student to have a personal connection to the charity,” Wise said. “You can see where their heart is at depending on what charity they donate to.”

The winning team will be allowed to choose from Youth Inspire, Wishing Well and the children’s wing at Hendrick Medical Center.

“We chose these charities because they help children and those that are often overlooked and I think that’s a great thing,” Wollman said.  “ACU’s really good at reaching out to the unloved and overlooked, so I think this is a great way to show that.”

Sara Bishop, freshman biology major from Longmont, Col., said FAC chose a dodgeball tournament because it seemed more exciting than a bake sale.  She said each team is guaranteed at least two games.

“I am hoping that students want to sign up for the tournament because they want to help the charity as well as be in an competitive environment,” Bishop said.

Students can sign up in teams of eight to twelve, but only eight players will allowed to play at a time.  Each team is required to have at least two girls and two boys. There will be a charge of $30 per team.
