Women fly past the Falcons

March 26, 2013 by Brittney Johnson

Both tennis teams returned to San Antonio for a clean sweep this past weekend.

“It was a good weekend for the Cats,” Micah Hermsdorf said.

Before heading to the Alamo City, the women’s team was here at home as they took on a double header, playing the University of El Paso (UTEP) and the University of the Texas Permian Basin (UTPB).

The ladies put up a fight against the El Paso Miners, as they won all of their doubles matches and 3 of 6 singles, as Hannah Kelley’s match against Anastasiya Sylenko went unfinished.

The duo sets of Julia Mongin and Brittney Reed and Nada Maranjovic and Kaysie Hermsdorf celebrated an 8-2 victory in doubles.

Kelley and partner Micah Hermsdorf also enjoyed an 8-3 win in doubles.

The Wildcats had no problems as they landed the Falcons of UT Permian Basin a 6-0 defeat.

Reed, Kelley, Maranjovic, Emily Conrad and Jamie Lee Denton were all victorious in their matches.

Sunday, the team challenged St. Mary’s University and the University of Texas San Antonio (UTSA).

The team won 4 of 6 of their singles matches and 2 of 3 doubles matches.

Mongin defeated Felicity Delgado 6-1, 6-3. Hannah Kelley took on Ariana Saldana winning 6-1, 6-0. Conrad challenged Joanie Bryant 6-2, 6-4 and Kaysie Hermsdorf matched with Valentine Lambrechts 6-4, 6-0.

With a 6-3 victory under their belts, the lady Wildcats faced off against UTSA.

The team dominated in 5 of 6 singles and 2 of 3 doubles matches, though partners Kaysie and Nada’s match went unfinished.

“We played tough matches,” Julia Mongin said, “Our strength was to stay together and fight hard.”

The women’s team now has a five-win streak.

Before the men’s team could join the women in San Antonio, they made a stop in Austin, to match up with UT. The team fell 0-7 to the Longhorns.

They ended their losing streak when they came out on top against St. Mary’s 5-2.

They won 2 of 3 doubles and only 3 of 6 singles, despite both matches of Borja Cortes and Marco Bensley ending unfinished.

Hans Hach defeated Andrej Klipa 6-1, 6-4. Guilherme Gesser took on Zach Nicholson 6-3, 6-2.

Nicklas Wingord matched with Carlos Olea 6-3, 6-3.

The Wildcats served a 4-3 victory against the UTSA Roadrunners.

Both teams will end their regular season in Pensacola, Fla., in April.

The United Athletic Conference is officially taking the place of the Western Athletic Conference in the 2026-2027 athletic year. The UAC is a joint football effort between the WAC and the ASUN but will now extend to all sports. #acuoptimist #acuathletics #wac #uac

My second year at ACU was full of opportunities that grew me as an individual and a journalist.

In my first year as editor in chief of @acuoptimist, we published six print issues, filmed a 3-hour live election show, and revamped our newscast, all while producing news weekly.

"Ending my college education early was always the plan for me, but the things that I have been able to see, experience and examine about ACU’s community were not. I have found immense growth in ACU over the past three and a half years, but ACU still has a long road to climb if it wants to keep catering to students as the world changes around them."
