‘Cats to host Tarleton State, Western New Mexico in NCAA Championship

April 26, 2013 by Brittney Johnson

The repeat Lone Star Conference Champions have a big weekend ahead of them, competing for the Division II title.

This weekend the women’s tennis team will gear up to take on the first round of the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament.

The first round, the ladies will observe the match between No.4 Tarleton (12-11) and No. 5  Western New Mexico (10-13) in the South Region. The Wildcats have defeated both teams earlier in the season.

The team will match up later in the day against the winner of the first match.

Depending on the matches that will take place this weekend, the ladies could move on to the Round of 16 portion of the tournament May 8.

This season has been a momentous one for the women’s team, as it is the last season not only for their seniors, but the team’s last footprint on Division II and the Lone Star Conference.

Next year, Abilene Christian will make their first appearance as a Division I school in the Southland Conference.

ACU is one of the original schools that made up the Southland Conference in its formation in 1963. The switch to the LSC was made after 10 years, in 1973.

Upon ACU’s return to the Southland Conference, it will compete against Central Arkansa, Houston Baptist, Incarnate Ward, Lamar University, McNeese State University, New Orleanas University, Nicholls State, Northwestern State, Oral Roberts, Sam Houston State, Southeastern Loisiana, Stephen F. Austin, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Royce Clough and Jael Morel have been named as Mr. and Miss ACU for the class of 2022, a traditional honor voted on by the student body and awarded to two members of each graduating class.
