Dead Day is here again

May 2, 2013 by Denzil Lim

Dead Day will not be an average study day. Events will take place from morning until the evening for students to take a break from studying and have fun.

The Office of Multicultural Enrichment is hosting its Block Party on Monday for students from 2 – 5 p.m. All students are invited for food and games. Shades, Sanctify and other groups will be performing.

The Bean will have its Midnight Breakfast from 10:30 p.m. – midnight. Students are able to win door prize drawings every 10 minutes and a final $150 drawing.

The Honors College is also hosting an event called Dead Day from 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. The party will have Cajun Cones and grilled hot dogs.

“We are inviting our 400 Honors students to come Zellner and its grassy fields for some Dead Day food and fun,” Dr. Michael Harbour, executive administration director of the Honors College, said.

Harbour said a healthy lifestyle comes from being able to study hard and stop to play.

The crackerjack croquet team, “Release the McCracken!” will be invited to the event. Students are invited to battle against the McCrackens in a game of nine-wickets.

Dr. Eric Gumm, director of the First-Year Program and Academic Development, said, “The purpose of Dead Day is to create space in a very busy point in the semester to allow students to study and prepare for exams as well as to create opportunities to de-stress with a break before exams begin.”

Even with a variety of events occurring on Dead Day, Gumm said students will have to adjust their schedule and practice good time management for rest, studies and play.

He said, “The events provide students with the opportunity to choose from events to recharge and prepare to launch into finals weeks.”

After experimenting with the elimination of Dead Day, Gumm said the university felt Dead Day has a useful purpose.

“Allocating time to study as well as distressing and making good choices with regard to rest and a healthy diet during Finals Week is what we encourage students to do,” Gumm said. “This allows them to be functioning at their best during their final examinations.”
