The ACU golf team finished its fall season Tuesday night with a strong performance at The Territory Classic in Duncan, Okla.
The Wildcats tied with host Cameron University for fourth place in the tournament, battling rainy conditions and tough competition at the par-72, 7,000-yard Territory Country Club.
St. Edward’s University took first place with a 19-stroke lead and rounds of 292-295 for a total of 587 over two rounds.
Incarnate Word came in second with rounds of 307-299, and West Texas A&M followed at 309-304 to clinch the third place spot.
The ‘Cats consistent rounds of 307-308 for a total of 615 helped them tie with Cameron University after the Aggies’ scores fell in their second round, finishing at 304-311.
“It was a tough way to finish the semester with the conditions of the tournament, but overall we really played great,” junior Corbin Renner said.
Renner and senior teammate Trey Sullivan both gave impressive performances in their last competition of the fall.
Sullivan shot a 72 in the first round and a 74 in the second round to tie for fifth in the individual medalist standings at 146.
Renner followed close behind at 77 and 74, finishing in 12th at 151.
Other finishers included freshmen Robert Johnson, who tied for 39th at 158, Hunter Rawls, who tied for 46th at 160 and Kyle Kennedy, who tied for 72nd at 172.
The Wildcats’ strong finish rounded off a successful first season of Div. I play.
In September, ACU tied for third with Midland College in the Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate golf tournament at the Diamondback Golf Club, with Renner taking home the individual medalist title.
Two weeks ago, the Wildcats finished ninth at the HBU Huskies Invitational in Woodforest, and last week they came in second at the Sam Houston State Harold Funston Invitational in Huntsville.
“Over the semester we played really well as a team,” Renner said. “It was very competitive throughout the team for spots on the top five and everyone really helped out. The freshmen really stepped up and filled the roles of the players we lost last year.”
The ACU golf team will look forward now, as they will begin competition again in the spring semester.
