During a brief Student Congress meeting Wednesday, representatives discussed an ongoing Students’ Association survey, its Homecoming parade float, its white out initiative and a handful of other topics.
Rodney Johnson, executive vice president and junior finance major from Odessa, said the members of the internal affairs committee have efficiently reached out to the student body with their SA survey. Johnson said about 56 students have already taken the survey which asks how students are being affected by SA activities, just part of the 10 percent of the study body they want to reach.
Johnson also discussed progress on SA’s Homecoming Parade float.
SA president Dylan Benac, senior political science major from Boerne, said SA has sold about 250 whiteout T-shirts so far and is preparing to order more in response to the demand.
J.P. Ralston, senior finance major from Plano, said appropriation meetings with clubs the night before went well. Women in Business decreased its funding requests for an event, the Alpha Epsilon Sigma club, for students interest in and/or majoring in agriculture, decided to no longer ask for SA to fund one of its events, and new dance club SophistiCats sought funding for uniforms and pompoms.
Ralston said AES self-funded its event and decided to give the funds to other clubs and organizations on the fall 2013 budget.
“I think this is an active representation about how we should interact with student groups,” Benac said. “It was, for me, the highlight of the week.”
To close the meeting, Johnson and Benac talked to the members about other projects under consideration for next semester and the progress they’ve made on them. Projects include potential artist performances on campus, ways to send off senior classes similar to how freshman classes are welcomed in and ways to connect better with alumni to create a better experience on campus.
The Congress meetings take place in the Onstead-Packer Bible Building Room 114 at 5:15 p.m. each Wednesday.
