The Wildcats had a rough time in Arkansas, but the ACU golf team already have their attention turned to the next tournament. Qualifying for the Louisiana-Monroe Wallace Jones invitational is already underway.
The ‘Cats will travel to Calhoun, La., for the two-day tournament at Southern Pines Golf Club. The University of Louisiana-Monroe will host the tournament.
ACU will look to get their season back on track after two disappointing finishes. They came in last in the Querencia Cabo Collegiate, which featured some of the best teams in the nation, including defending National Champion, Alabama. Earlier this week they finished 12th in the 14-team field at the Arkansas-Little Rock First Tee Classic. The ‘Cats have cooled off significantly since the start of the season. They began the fall season with four top-five finishes in their first five tournaments. In addition, Junior Corbin Renner has one tournament win and played exceptionally well this week in Arkansas, finishing seventh.
“We need more consistent play to get back to where we were in the fall,” freshman Kyle Karnei said. “Us young guys need to step up.”
The Wildcats have taken a different group of players to all but two tournaments. The only constants have been Renner and senior Trey Sullivan. Junior Luke Carpenter has only missed qualifying for one tournament. The other two positions have been a toss-up. Four freshmen and one redshirt have been putting pressure on the upperclassmen with their qualifying scores.
The talent is undeniably there for the team to get back to finishing in the top five; they have just have to regain their consistency.
