Men’s tennis continues winning streak against Lamar

April 15, 2014 by Price Bahcall

The ACU men’s tennis team kept their winning streak and undefeated conference record alive when they took down Lamar University 5-2.

The men improved their overall record to 12-9 and remain perfect in conference at 4-0. Their success has not gone unnoticed as freshmen Nico Agritelley was named Southland Conference Men’s Player of the Week.

Agritelley was the only undefeated tennis player last week as the Wildcats went 3-1. The freshmen from Dallas went 4-0 in singles to improve him to 13-7 and 3-0 in doubles with three different partners. He won all his matches in straight sets for the exception of a come from behind victory over Rice.

ACU began the match against the struggling Lamar winning the doubles point. Marco Bensley and Nicklas Wingord won 8-4 and No. 1 doubles team Borja Cortes and Guilherme Gesser squeezed out an 8-6 win.

The Wildcats won straight sets at the No. 1,3 and 6 spots and added another with Agritelley’s marathon victory over Rajamaki, 6-4, 1-6, 13-11.

All this success sets up a conference clash with the co-leaders Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (15-9, 4-0 Southland) down in Austin. Their first match was postponed due to rain.

The men will also be taking on St. Edwards this Wednesday. They will be making their final appearance of the season in Abilene this Friday against Oral Roberts before the National Invitational Tournament in Omaha, Neb.
