Softball to host Houston Baptist this weekend

April 24, 2014 by Hannah Little

The ACU softball team returns home this weekend for a series against the Houston Baptist University Huskies. This will be the first time ACU has met with HBU this season.

The Huskies are 17-24 overall and 10-11 in conference play. The team is similar to the Wildcats as they stand 18-25 overall and 7-7 in conference play after battling with Sam Houston State University last weekend.

Both teams lost two games against SHSU and won one game. Needless to say, the match against HBU and ACU will be a close game to watch.

Senior pitcher Peyton Mosley reviews what happened in last weekend’s games and is preparing for this weekend.

“Our pitching last weekend did a great job,” Mosley said. “Although there were times SHSU had some solid hits, our pitchers still continued to hit their spots well and utilized the change up. Up until this past weekend, they hardly ever made errors, but when they did we took advantage of the errors and scored more runs.”

Not only has ACU’s pitching improved this season, but the hitting has also become strong. However, this time around, against SHSU, the Bearkats’ defense improved as well and remained solid throughout the game.

“Our hitting was strong majority of the time, but Sam Houston played solid defense and even when we were connecting with the ball, they made the plays when hit to them,” Mosley said.

ACU finished the series with nine runs while SHSU had 16.

The Huskies recently played SHSU and, like the Wildcats, the team lost the first two games and won the last game. Houston Baptist was only able to put up four runs after the complete series, unlike SHSU that had 11 runs.

The series against Lamar University ended up a little different. The Huskies lost three games against Lamar giving up a total of 23 runs, while HBU only had eight runs.

The Wildcats look forward to adding wins to its conference record this weekend against the HBU Huskies. The series will be at home on Poly Wells Field and will kick off with a doubleheader at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday. The closing game will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
