Softball ends with rival UIW at home

May 1, 2014 by Hannah Little

The ACU softball team will be back in action this weekend as the team’s 2014 season comes to a close in Abilene. ACU will face University of the Incarnate Word on Saturday and Sunday.

The Wildcats competed against UIW earlier this season in San Antonio. ACU dropped the first two games (6-7) (3-7), but won the third game (3-0).

“It’s going to be a good finish, but a sad finish with our six seniors,” head coach Bobby Reeves said. “We’ll hopefully go into the weekend with some confidence and play well, and send them off in a positive manner.”

The six seniors this year that have contributed nothing but hard work and good leadership are Madison Buckley, Ashley Nolan, Lyndi Smith, Courtney Flanary and Peyton Mosley .

“It’s just been a joy and I wish them the best in all the things they’re about to endeavor,” Reeves said.

Reeves told the seniors,”Thank you for the chance to be a part of your lives and for what you’ve brought to ACU, softball and to what you’ve brought to me.”

Having already played the team, coach Reeves talked about facing UIW for the last series of the season.

“It’s a good series, it’s a fun time,” Reeves said. “I think it’s because we know each other so well and we are going to try some things a little bit different maybe than the last time we played. They won two out of three the first of the year. Hopefully we will get two out of three this time.”

The Wildcat’s close will kickoff with a doubleheader at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, followed by Sunday’s game at 1 p.m. Outfielder Madison Buckley talked about the season and what is to be expected of this weekend.

“At first, we started off pretty shaky and there have been some growing pains,” Buckley said. “But it’s been an awesome experience and I think that as the season has gone on, the team has seen that not to be intimidated by big name schools. We are just as good as them and can hang and play.”

“With Incarnate Word, they are a real scrappy team just like us,” Buckley said. “Every game, anyone can come out to play that given day and show up to play and beat the other team. It’s always been really close when we’ve played them. So I think that with seeing them, we can make the necessary adjustments and make it a really good series to end on.”

"Ending my college education early was always the plan for me, but the things that I have been able to see, experience and examine about ACU’s community were not. I have found immense growth in ACU over the past three and a half years, but ACU still has a long road to climb if it wants to keep catering to students as the world changes around them."
